Why It Is An Absolute Must For Physician Assistants To Buy Malpractice Insurance

There are large amounts of malpractice lawsuits filed against doctors and physician assistant on a yearly basis. It is also not necessary that the physician assistant makes a mistake to become liable. Almost anything can happen when it comes to the medical world. All it takes is one simple and inconsequential lawsuit to put an end to a physician assistant's career and possibly make him bankrupt. This is what will happen if medical professional liability insurance is not purchased.

Out of all of the professions in the United States, the physician assistant profession is one that is developing the most rapidly. Moreover, many states are giving more duties and responsibilities to physician assistants because they'd like to keep the healthcare costs down. Given this scenario, it is absolutely certain that medical malpractice suits against physician assistants will continue to rise. The AAPA calculates that the amount of physician assistants working in America will be 141,000 around the time of 2020. It is obvious that all of these working physician assistants can be sued for malpractice.

Although a physician assistant might be on the company's insurance policy, he or she can still be held liable for medical malpractice.

Although physician assistants are not considered to be independent healthcare providers, they can still be held personally liable. In the eyes of the law, each medial worker can be held liable for what he does.

A lot of physician assistants think that they are okay if they are on their company's insurance policy. This is completely false. When they are put on an employer's insurance policy, they are not insured for the full one hundred percent coverage. They can still be held individually liable for their own negligence. They may have to pay the full or part of a plaintiff's settlement.

All hospitals understand will get medical insurance that will cover its healthcare staff. But, this is not enough insurance. Physician assistants must buy their own malpractice insurance individually or under a group plan from a commercial insurance company. They must also carefully choose their liability limits.

There are 2 sorts of insurance and they are based upon either the occurrence or the claims made. The type of insurance where the incidents happen while the insurance is still in force is called occurrence insurance. Even if the incident is reported much later, it will be admitted so long as the incident happened when the policy was in force. However, this type of insurance is not so common anymore because of the many unknown factors that are connected to malpractice insurance lawsuits. The second type of insurance known as claims made has become more popular these days.

With claims made insurance policies, the malpractice incident has to happen and be reported during the time period that the insurance is in effect. The claim will be disallowed if it is not reported before the insurance expires. Physician assistants who want coverage for claims that are reported after policy termination must buy another policy, which is called Extended Reporting Endorsement. A physician assistant can get the type of insurance policy called prior acts insurance that will provide coverage for malpractice incidents that have happened, but they still have not brought to the insurance company's attention yet.

Physician assistants have to pick the right malpractice policy that according to their job description, where they practice and the level of risk that is associated with their particular job. These responsibilities are grouped into three different levels or Class A, B, or C.

Class A physician assistants are those who assist in the diagnostic management of patients.

Class B physician assistants are those who assist in general surgeries, obstetrics (prenatal or postnatal care), trauma/emergency procedures (up to 10 hours per week), and anesthesiology.

Class C physician assistants are able to participate in plastic, neuro, thoracic, OB/GYN, orthopaedic and cardiovascular surgeries. Also, they are responsible for helping out with over ten hours weekly in trauma situations, cardiac catheterization and obstetric delivery room procedures.

Physician assistants should purchase the right about of insurance coverage if they help with risky procedures such as cardiovascular surgery. If their job responsibilities are minor in nature, then these physician assistants won't have to have that high of an insurance limit. However, there is a noticeable increase in the state's medical malpractice lawsuits, then the physician assistant should opt for a much higher insurance limit.

By buying medical malpractice insurance, a physician assistant can help to safeguard both his healthcare career and this financial future. Even if he is on his employer's insurance policy, a physician assistant should also get his own coverage just to make sure that no risk is involved.

Everything You Need To Know About A Physician Assistant Scholarship

A lot of students who have aspirations of learning to become physician assistants look toward the physician assistant scholarship. What students are going to find is that this will be a great way for them to get into this exciting industry. There is a good amount of attraction for young students to pursue a career in this field. Perhaps the biggest factor that attracts students is the fact that there is rapid growth and the field is becoming more aggressive. Additionally; you will find that there are an endless number of opportunities available to the graduate.

Not only is there the attraction of working in the medical field, but also the chance to make a difference. One example is the fact that individuals will have a chance to serve their community. There are also practical reasons as well. For instance, the time it takes students to study to become a physician assistant takes a lot less time than it would take for them to study to become a full-fledged physician. Nonetheless, though physician assistants are not official doctors, the salaries they earn can be quite lucrative, too!

For students who are serious about starting their careers in this interesting field of medicine there is educational assistance available to them. This applies to students who have aspirations of becoming physician assistants, but who are short on the necessary funds to see that dream to fruition.

Reason for Scholarships

You will find that there is a major reason for the physician assistant scholarship. Simply put, this is going to be the high demand for trained professionals who are experienced in the medical field. Perhaps one of the reasons for the demand for physician assistants is the fact that there are new requirements to reevaluate how medicine is being practice. This is how medicine should now be practiced in the US. This includes the constant new stories about how healthcare isn't as effective as it once was. Because of this, we find that because the U.S. is showing a need for qualified professionals, the federal government now offers assistance for those students that may qualify for them.

1. A Look at Federal Progams

We find that the federal programs dealing with the physician assistant scholarship are extensive and they give them a good chance to qualify. Take for example, the scholarship for disadvantaged students. This is a scholarship in place to help students in the medical field get the financial help that they need. Another idea for a physician assistant scholarship is the Health Resources and Services Administration National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program, which students should also look to for an opportunity for a scholarship. This scholarship is defined by its offering of funds for education in return for some dedication on the student̢۪s part to provide service in a field that has traditionally had a hard time in retaining medical professionals.

Students will also have a chance to get a physician assistant scholarship looking at the U.S. military. Now, for some reason or another, a good number of students overlook this option. This could because they feel that the service would be difficult or they have an objection to the U.S. military actually does. Those who are looking to become a physician assistant should still consider this as a possibility. What you need to take into account is that the military is in need of medical professionals. Most people don't understand that the military does more than just defend the US and go to war. The military offers students̢۪ medical education in return for a preset enlistment period. In fact; many states have a similar feature to help ensure there are qualified professionals in their communities.

2. A Look at Private Programs

An important thing to consider for a student looking to become a physician assistant is the private programs that they can discover. Perhaps a good place to begin will be to review organizations that may represent physician assistants as they may offer scholarships. Organizations that represent the profession of physician assistant generally make certain scholarship funds available to students. As a benefit, you will find that have a better understanding of the education and professional criteria in place for the physician assistant. The school students attend for their physician assistant training can help them understand the myriad of private programs that are available to them. As a matter of fact, certain physician assistant schools might even feature their very own foundation-sponsored scholarship to aid you in defraying the financial burden of this kind of education! Ethnic organizations are another good choice for a physician assistance scholarship. If students fit the specific ethnicity of said ethnic organization, they can capitalize on the monies of these programs so that they can receive the required help as they strive toward their career goals.

3. A Look at Non-Traditional Programs

Students should look to all possibilities when it comes to these scholarships, like non-traditional scholarships. One choice will be positions that allow them to act as an intern. You will find that hospitals, HMOs and even healthcare groups can offer education assistance. If an individual is at a lower level in the medical field, they should contact their human resources department to determine if they have an education assist program.

You will find that a physician assistant scholarship can make a considerable difference. For many people it can mean the difference between giving up on their dreams and having the means to make them come true. It is important that you don't assume that because you have financial problems that you can't get the education and career you deserve.

Physician Assistant Degree 101

Those interested in becoming a physician assistant will find that they will need to first get their physician assistant degree. What you will find is that the physician assistant position is one that has increased in popularity and remains a steady choice in the medical industry. These physician assistants will find that the remain in greater demand and since healthcare needs are on the rise, there will continue to be growth in the industry. Even though they aren't a doctor; they can earn quite a bit of money in the industry.

By definition, a physician assistant is a healthcare professional who is certified, licensed and registered by the state of his residence to practice in the field of medicine as part of a team that consists of doctors. The physician assistant will be focused on the maintenance, treatment and prevention of illnesses, while offering many of the healthcare services a doctor can provide. This individual has the ability to perform exams, diagnose and treat sickness and even interpret tests as they issue medical orders and help with surgeries as well. Before they can even begin this job though, they will need to take the time to obtain their physician assistant degree.

Anyone who is interested in joining the physician assistant program should take a moment to meet with current students to understand how the process works. Before you even enroll in a program for a physician assistant degree, you should ensure you review all the information available about this career choice. For example, certain websites such as mypatraining.com and its forum are well worth examining.

To be successful in this process, you will want to take a moment to get some medical experience under your belt before you begin to enroll in a physician assistant program as well. The reason for this piece of advice is because a good many physician assistant programs look for applicants who already possess a wide range of medical knowhow. Perhaps a good starting point for this will be to ensure that you do have 2 years of actual patient care to assist you. People who normally apply for physician assistant programs are surgical assistants or technologists, nursing assistants, medical assistants, vocational nurses, physical therapy technicians, athletic trainers, military medics and emergency medical technicians.

For this process, you will want to look at the requirements that you will have to meet before you can enroll in this program. An example would be that before you get enroll in the program, you will need to have your bachelor's in Health Science. Of course, you will also need to get your courses like Math, Microbiology, English and similar courses completed first as well.

Next up is researching the physician assistant program of choice. A general rule of thumb is to review the physician assistant program you are considering as each one will aid in different needs. A good idea will be to sit down and do your research to ensure that you understand what the program will actually entail.

Students should also contact the program they are interested in directly. It is important that the student speaks with a representative that can guide them in the program. As part of the process, the student should ensure they get an informational packet as well.

It is a wise idea to meet with other graduates of the program to gain feedback on it. It will be during this time that you can meet with the physician assistant and get an idea of the experience they had.

You will also find that that opening an account with CASPA (Central Application Service for Physician Assistants) can be beneficial as well. You will find a vast majority of programs will require that you apply to them via CASPA. It is, though, quite possible that certain programs demand further applications like an application of admission to their specific university. Since they can take quite a bit of time to work through, you will need to make sure that you apply for CASPA in advance. A good idea will be to gather all your employment and education information in advance.

Recommendations will also be essential if you are wanting to help improve your chances of getting into the physician assistant program of your choice. The minimum number of people writing recommendations is three, and at least one of said three has to be either a physician or a physician assistant.

A personal statement should be composed as well. To be considered, the CASPA application should be completed in a grammatically correct manner with clear and concise answers. A good idea will be to have your statement proofread as well.

If you are invited to an interview; you are already on the road to success. Prepare for said interview by performing a mock interview with a real physician assistant, and also ask him what he went through during his own interview. Finally, dress conservatively to the interview, arrive early and behave professionally.

You are going to find that by following each of these steps, you will have a chance to get into the physician assistant program. At the end of this program, you will finally obtain your physician assistant degree. Of course, you will need to understand that even with your degree, you are still required to get certification to practice in your state. Only after doing all this can you finally be approved to operate in your state. What this means is that you will need to continue the process even after you have earned your degree.

Responsibilities Of A Physician Assistant

What does a physician assistant do? If you are entertaining a career in the medical field, this is a question you have probably asked. While you may love the idea of becoming a doctor, the thought of spending years in medical school and thousands of dollars on your education may not sound as great. This has likely led you to consider a career as a physician assistant.

It is common for those who dream of being doctors to become physician assistants instead. This is a reasonable compromise, since a physician assistant can take on many responsibilities traditionally reserved for a doctor. Some practices allow a physician assistant to maintain a caseload of their own patients, while working closely under a doctor who can help if there are problems.

Physician assistants are in great demand and can apply for jobs in many medical facilities. You may find yourself working with children in a pediatricians office, or you could end up in a cosmetic surgery office doing consults with Botox patients. You could work in a hospital environment assisting multiple doctors. There are many medical clinics that need assistants as well. If there is a doctor on the staff, there is likely to be a position for a physician assistant.

While being educated as a physician assistant, you can decide to specialize just like doctors do, or to go with a general practice. If you want your career to be focused in a particular medical field, then additional coursework can be picked up so you are specialized in that area of medicine.

On the job, this position requires a lot of desk work as well as interaction directly with patients. Below you will find a quick overview of the duties, though the exact requirements will vary depending on where you work and what you choose to specialize in (if you specialize at all). There are different laws regarding what an assistant can do in different states, so you will have to be aware of those laws.

What administrative tasks are required from a physician assistant? The majority of the office work is focused on insurance claims, pharmacies, and coordinating with other doctors on behalf of patients. A physician assistant may spend considerable amounts of time calling in prescriptions for all patients of the practice, getting referrals to other doctors patients need to see, and making sure that all insurance claims are handled properly and promptly.

Doctors should find that their work is much easier because of the workload carried by their assistant. The doctor will not waste time making phone calls and working with insurance claims, because they have to deal with the needs of the patients.

Doctors see patients on a daily basis, and many physician assistants do the same. They are able to take a complete medical history for patients, listen to their problems, analyze symptoms and physical reactions, and come up with diagnoses. A physician assistant can do everything the patient requires, and that includes prescribing medications that are controlled.

There are times a physician assistant may not have the knowledge to deal with a patient, and that is when the doctor will step in to assist and educate. Sometimes work will be carried out alongside a physician, but in many cases the majority of a physician assistants work is done independently.

It is understandable if you are confused about the differences between physicians and physician assistants. It is very easy to understand when you think about the extra training and experience a physician must obtain before taking on their title and establishing a practice. It must be noted that as a physician assistant you will have to go through some advanced learning, but you wont be required to go through the strenuous programs required to become a doctor.

Radiologist Assistant Education And Training

radiologist assistant (RA) is a radiography technician, or a radiographer who has taken additional education and certifications. Some of the more advance imaging jobs can be performed by these people, and they are not required to work directly under supervision. In many cases, the radiologist assistant will operate in quite an autonomous way, not being under the view of a radiologist, but merely operating under the auspices of a licensed physician who is a radiologist.

In the United States, the RA position is relatively new, and there are fewer than fifty courses to be taken. More and more universities are expected to follow suit as radiology assisting becomes more accepted. Right now, more and more universities are beginning to offer RA courses. The courses and the material involved are new, so they are still under development.

It is important that you seek out a course recognized by the ARRT, or American Registry of Radiologic Technologist.

There are, as of in 2010, about 11 programs in the United States which are offered for the radiologist assistant program. These confer degrees at either the Bachelor's degree or the Master's degree level. In the radiology field, it is impossible to obtain a degree lower than a Bachelor's.

You will need to both complete the course and graduate in good standing if you wish to become a radiology assistant. Accredited RA programs are out there, but they will only accept those who already have several years as a technician under their belt.

The curriculum of the degree programs for a radiologist assistant program typically require about two years of study to finish components of study will include: assessment of the patients, care and treatment plans, testing and diagnosis, information management, radio-biology, clinical radiology, pharmacology, legal aspects of health care and medical ethics.

If you elect to take a Master's Degree level radiologist assistant course you will also be required to produce a master's thesis in order to complete your course. In addition to the educational requirements to graduate from the accredited program of study, you may also need to add continuing education to remain certified and to continue in your employment.

Once you have actually graduated, you will need to take and pass an exam in order to practice. The state might not demand you obtain state licensing, but your accreditor will have the final say. Only a fraction of the states now require a state license to practice.

There is a certification examination which is offered by the ARRT that must be taken in order to acquire your Registered Radiology Assistant certification.

While you are only a Radiology Assistant, the ARRT still requires that you become certified in Advance Cardiac Life Support which is a certification provided by the American Heart Association just like other medical profession such as nurses and physician assistants.

Your radiologist assistant licensing and registration must be renewed each year and you must maintain your radiology technician certification by renewing it every two years.

Your radiologist assistant job will be contingent on an annual renewal. They are also required to keep their technician certifications current by paying the renewal fees and filing application every two years. In order to perform as a radiologist assistant you must also be a radiologic technologist.

You will find that many of the procedures you perform as a radiologist assistant will be the same as that which is done by a full fledged radiologist. As a radiologist assistant you will be assisting or performing various invasive techniques like fluoroscopy, x-rays, and even MRI's. Once the RA completes the tests in question, the results need to be sent to the licensed radiologist for a conclusion.

The need for new graduate radiology assistants, according to the ASRT is expected to grow exponentially in the next decade. There are currently not enough radiologists or radiologist assistants to keep apace of the work that is already being done. There are a number of people out there who need diagnostic testing, and as a result, the field will grow considerably over the next few years.

In 2009 and 2010, the American Medical Association stated that the need for radiologists is growing along with their popularity in the medical community. In addition to that it has been noted that the expected salary of a licensed radiologist assistant can be around $100,00 per year depending on the area.

Physician Assistant Educational Requirements 101

While a physician assistant practices medicine, they do so under the supervision of a certified physician. A PA, in many ways functions as a physician. A physician's assistant is not in need of babysitting of course, but it is necessary for them to work within the practice of a licensed physician. The care rendered will be the responsibility of the physician and the PA.

The educational requirements for both are quite different, and a PA will attend school for a shorter period of time. They can, however, perform many of the same kinds of responsibilities and may diagnose the patient, as well as offer medication and treatment regimens to the patient.

It is of course understood that a physician assistant spends much more time in school than a basic medical assistant. In the office of a physician, the PA has several responsibilities. Their responsibilities are many and diverse, and quite often, the physician does not play a key role in their work. What this means is that while the PA may be functional in the practice of the physician, in most cases the PA is not directly overseen by the doctor and may hold their own office hours in the practice of the physician, seeing patients independently unless they determine that another opinion is in order. Patients will occasionally ask to speak with the PA at the office instead of the physician. The use of a PA is a great method of preventing the white coat syndrome that manifests in the older and younger patients.

Each state has different requirements set for PA's. However as a general rule, the following tasks are expected of the PA, and fall within their scope of practice and physician assistant job description: diagnosis, x-ray interpretation, lab result analysis, prescription treatment, therapeutic decisions, patient examination and treatment and wound care.

The Physician Assistant will be in charge of viewing the patient and evaluating them to determine their overall health, as well as taking medical history, and in some cases treating immediate problems or issues of the patient. In addition to that they can prescribe a patient treatment plan. The actual scope of practice of each Physician Assistant will vary widely. It will not only be decided by the state of residence, but also by the physician under which they work.

While not strictly necessary, many of those who apply to the PA training programs are already holding a degree of some type. In many cases this may be a bachelor degree which will permit them to complete PA course work much more rapidly. There will be many of course who have medical experience, for instance nursing, EMT, or paramedic training.

The Physician assistant course may take about two years to complete. There are many degree paths to take in a PA program. In some cases, you may obtain your Associate degree, your Bachelor's degree, or the masters. Your prior level of education will determine which degree you gain.

Each PA course has it's own set of requirements. As it is important to communicate with pateints, there are multiple courses that will help you out in addition to your standard medical. Among the common courses that you will take if you are to become a PA are: nutrition, anatomy, physiology, pathology, chemistry, immunology, communication, biology, clinical treatment and medical surgical treatments.

Every school is different and will oviously make different reqeuirements for your attendance. We cannot stress enough the importance of attending an accredited course. You might find these offered by physical colleges, medical colleges, or even allied health programs.

PA's are typically well compensated. The average annual salary for the Physician Assistant in 2009 was about 85,000 USD. The new graduate can expect to make 5-7K less than that fee upon graduation. It has been found that the lowest pay is 50k per year, which is nothing to scoff at.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the United States, the health care fields which are most critical are those of physicians, nursing and other allied health professions such as Physician Assistant. Over time the profession will grow along with the salary.

Essential Requirements Of A Physician Assistant

The medical field can yield amazing rewards, and it can be exciting at the same time. Those who brave the perils of the medical world can help others and maintain a decent standard of living. If you were to become a doctor however, you would face some insane difficulties. Naturally, it leaves many people out of work, and the medical world short on doctors. Becomeing a physician assistant however would often be the better option.

A physician assistant is a bit different from a standard physician for a few reasons. First of all, you will hold a certification, but you will be a far cry from a PhD. The benefits that accompany the certification are quite nice, and one of these benefits is the fact that you can operate inside a physician's office. Along with that, there are quite a few people out there that actually opt to see the PA. This could either be due to scheduling issues, or more likely because the price is lower. No matter what, you will probably discover that the physician's assistant can work either under the supervision of the physician, or independently in the same office.

If you want to become a physician's assistant then you will be pleased to know that you will not be required to take quite as much schooling as a PhD. The job will only require two years of education in most cases. Before any license can be issue to a PA, the state does require an individual to pass a national exam.

Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (NCCPA) - Those certified will be elidgible for this examination, and it will be necessary for them to finish 100 hours of medical education every two years. Re-certification will need to be obtained once every six years.

As with any other medical profession, it is possible for the PA to meet other physician assistant requirements. As you probably know, there are a number of different branches that you might take in the medical field, and they could easily include pediatrics, neurology, surgery, and if you wish to branch out even further, you might even look into radiology. If you wish to truly expand into different areas, you will need to have experience in other duties.

In the event you meet the physician assistant requirements, there will be plenty of work. You might find yourself working in a hospital, an outpatient care center, or even a school. All of these are open to you should you obtain this highly coveted certification.

The state is the governing entity of the PA job responsibilities. In some cases it will be acceptable for a PA to fill out prescriptions, and in some states this is a job let only to degree holding physicians. The job description will change across state lines, but a few things will stay the same. The most noteworthy of course, would be that becoming certified calls for some hard work. A previous medical background will also be required. That being said, this is not the easiest job to get, even if it is simpler than a full fledged medical degree.

The last thing we will mention is the fact that there are too few physician assistants in the United States, and they are quickly becoming popular. There is no doubt that the profession will become highly sought after, and the overall physician assistant salary is going to increase significantly depending on the level of experience that you can bring to the table. If you're ready to search for your certification, then now is the time to do it.

All You Need To Know About Physician Assistant Programs In California

Physician assistant programs are offered in many states however, those who are looking to start a career might want to look at the programs offered in California. Students like this have great options in California because there are already nine programs that are accredited by the ARC-PA. California only trails Pennsylvania and New York in the number of programs for physician assistants that carry the required accreditation. Based on the program that students end up picking, they can get a mere certificate, an associates degree, a bachelors degree or even a masters degree.

Eligibility requirements can differ based upon the school and physician assistant program chosen by the student. Some schools might require two years worth of college credits as an example of a prerequisite for entry. A student must also possess a minimum number of hours working with patients to fulfill a requirement that most colleges and universities have for their physician assistant programs. It also will not hurt to already have some prior experience in the field of healthcare. Schools can also be quite selective when admitting students into their program by requiring them to have a minimum GPA before being accepted.

California has a great number of physician assistant programs. Stanford School of Medicine in Palo Alto is one of the schools that provides physician assistant programs to those who are interested. Students who enroll in this school can take programs that will allow them to receive a certificate or associate's degree. Students also have the option to enroll in programs that lead to them earning a bachelor's or master's degree when they choose the Stanford School of Medicine.

The state also has other great school choices too. Riverside Community College located in Moreno Valley is another choice for interested students. Students could also choose to enroll at San Joaquin Valley College in Visalia. These schools offer students programs that culminate in them earning an associate's degree.

On top of these choices, there are still other schools that offer physician assistant programs in California. Touro University, Loma Linda University, Western University Health Sciences, The University of Southern California (Keck), The University of California Davis School of Medicine in Sacramento, and Samuel Merritt University are some of the other schools.

Students who are very serious about doing the hard work that it takes to become a physician assistant have to be certain if they are first eligible to make an application to the program and the school of their choice. Each school in California that offers physician assistant programs has a different set of requirements for eligibility. Thus, it is recommended that students directly get in touch with the school that they have their sights set on. The school that the student applies to will most definitely be assessing the student's personality, academic record, and their experience.

In California, a student must understand that completing an accredited program will not be sufficient to become a physician assistant. Students are going to be made to take and then pass the national certification examination referred to as the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination. The laws regarding the practice of physician assistants vary from state to state. Still, one of these requirements has to do with passing the certifying exam that is administered by the NCCPA. Once the student has passed the exam, they are allowed to attach the title of Physician Assistant-Certified to after their name

This is, however not the end of the certification process. Obligated to complete continuing education courses, a physician assistant must complete 100 hours of courses every two years. On top of the education, a physician assistant is required to successfully complete a recertification exam every six years ; differently, the choice can be made to enroll in another program and complete a home certification examination.

Enrolling into one of the better programs should be the goal of a student who wants to get into a physician assistant program. The better programs are the natural choice for students who want an advantage over their competition because these programs are more adept at preparing their students for the day to day challenges they will face as well as preparing them for the examinations required. These factors should be considered by the students:

Physician Assistant Programs that have a high percentage of students who pass the PANCE (Physician Assistant National Certification Exam) are usually among the better programs to attend. Students want to look at which programs produce students who score high on this examination since that shows they have been more than adequately prepared by the program.

Rankings should alert students about which programs are academically competitive with each other. They should be regarded by students as a guide. Usually, the ratings show that Duke University is number one, followed closely behind by the following universities: DC's George Washington University, Georgia's Emory University, the University of Utah, and the University of Iowa.

Students should also weigh into account their compatibility with their program of choice. The cost, campus environment, and the location can affect the compatibility. Being one of the most overlooked, students must factor in the compatibility of the school with their goals. Students in a physician assistant program that is not convenient in terms of how much they have to pay, where it is located and what the environment is like will not be able to make the most of their enrollment.

Physician assistant programs in California come in all forms, mainly because quite a few schools in the state offer them. Students wanting to enroll in one of these programs must understand the various programs before applying because not all physician assistant programs are created equally. Without this consideration, the student may be accepted into a program that will not be conducive to their style of learning. Cost, location, and the campus environment are all factors to consider.

Physician Assistant Jobs Are On The Rise

The healthcare industry is witnessing boom times and naturally, physician assistant jobs are on a roll. Here is a guide to the physician assistants career which is growing in demand in both rural and urban areas.

Typically, physician assistants are required to complete a 26-month training program after they successfully obtain a 4-year college degree and get some job experience. After their initial certification, a physician assistant must complete 100 hours of continuing education credits every two years along with the successful completion of a recertification exam every six years to retain their certification to practice.

The AAPA (American Association of Physician Assistants) and the NCCPA (National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants) are the two professional bodies in the field. The former regulates the field, while the latter administers and tracks certifications and continuing education credits.

Physician assistants are an important part of the doctors office. They are supervised by a licensed doctor, but also allowed to work independently inside the doctor's office. They must be within 1 hour of their doctor's call.

They help in diagnosis and analyzing lab reports including x-rays. Some of their other duties include helping their doctor by listening to patients, recording patients' history, deciding treatment options, writing prescriptions for medication or therapy, perform patient examinations, and assist in surgical procedures. On top of that, excellent communication skills need to be in a physician assistant's repertoire because they will be interacting with patients most of the time.

Spending most of their time on their feet, physician assistants do a vast majority of attending to and interacting with the patients. Some of the busiest assistants are those who are part of a surgical team. This is not an easy job - it requires handling stress and working late nights, weekends and holidays. The physician assistant must handle all physical and mental stress with a cool and calm that does not show on his face because that may panic the patient.

The tasks that a physician assistant can perform vary in each American state. So, if you want to know the exact job responsibilities, refer to your states employment website.

It is expected that physician assistant jobs will grow more rapidly in availability compared to other jobs. The need for physician assistants is much higher in hospitals, clinics, prisons, and many other facilities both in urban and rural areas. As per a government report published in 2008-end, it is estimated that physician assistants jobs are expected to grow by 39% from 2008 to 2018. The increased demand is caused by the simultaneous evolution and cost lowering initiatives that are happening in the healthcare industry. Appointing physician assistants helps healthcare establishments lower its cost without compromising on quality of service or productivity. States too are now allowing physician assistants to perform more medical procedures and all these factors are leading to a higher demand for professionals.

There are a few factors which determine a physician assistant salary which are as follows:

Specialization: Physician assistants trained to handle complicated medical conditions like HIV or AIDS or cancer gets paid more than other assistants who can handle regular medical conditions. Having a specialization as a physical assistant immediately places them in higher demand and allows them to command a higher salary that can exceed the maximum figure (given below).

Area: The pay that is administered for urban centers is often higher than that of the pay in rural facilities. Also, it is typical that the pay in urban centers located in denser populated areas is higher than urban centers that are located in less dense areas. Cost of living is typically higher in densely populated areas which attributes to the higher pay in urban areas.

Experience can factor into this as well. The more experience that a physician assistant has the higher salary that they will receive.

A typical physician assistant is paid between $75,000 and $106,000 according to salary.com However, a more realistic expectation for salary would be between $65,000 and $90,000 with just a few exceptions. The fact still remains that a physician assistant that has a specialization will still draw a higher salary. Hospitals and outpatient centers pay the highest salary, while government facilities and educational institutions pay low. Like mentioned before, often rural areas will pay lower than urban centers.

It is also expected that a physician assistant's employer will pay for their professional liability insurance, state licensing fees, registration fees, and credential fees.

Physician assistants can choose to specialize in handling critical medical conditions like HIV/AIDS, neonatology, cancer, etc. Professionals that have a specialization in a critical medical condition will often be paid a much higher salary, as was mentioned above. Specializations like surgery, cancer, HIV, neonatology, pediatrics, emergency medicine, and more are offered by many schools.

Then, a physician assistant can enroll for a postgraduate residency training program in areas like emergency medicine, rural primary care, occupational medicine, etc.

A physician assistant pay increases with time and experience. One caveat to all of this is that the assistant must always be supervised by a licensed doctor.

The ability to remain mobile between specializations, no need for med school, and not being required to complete an internship are among the many advantages that a physician assistant career has. They also are rewarded with a self-satisfying career that helps people recover from medical conditions, many of which can be major.

No two days are the same in the life of a PA because each day poses new challenges and learning opportunities. However, it is impossible for a physician assistant to become an entrepreneur because they are still required to be supervised by a licensed doctor.

This is all you need to know about physician assistant jobs and career prospects.

Career As A Physician Assistant - How Much Can You Make?

How much do physician assistants make? That is the question that students are likely asking themselves if they are seriously pondering a career as a physician assistant. It turns out that being employed as a physician assistant is actually more than just getting a good job in the healthcare field. A physician assistant has far more earning power than those working in many other sections of the healthcare field. There are many reasons for this. Perhaps the most notable reason for the higher earnings is the fact that a physician assistant does a lot of the tasks traditionally reserved for doctors. Because of this, they are continually in great demand across many different healthcare facilities. Most healthcare workers cannot do half of the tasks a physician assistant will do every single day.

Students looking at entering this field must be mindful of the fact that the salary they are going to earn as a physician assistant is not going to be the same everywhere. There are many factors that can come into play when determining salaries for a specific position. The factors that must be reviewed in terms of how much students can earn as physician assistants are really quite straightforward. What follows is an analysis of what those who are considering a future as physician assistants can reasonably expect to make with this career decision. As students weigh both the pros and the cons of becoming physician assistants, they will increasingly find that the benefits of this occupation are not strictly limited to money.

You will learn about all of the factors that can decide the pay for a physician assistant below, but note that the average salary tends to fall between fifty and eighty thousands per year. Some physician assistants will naturally make more than others. Yet, this current average is on the spot with todays market conditions according to Indeed.com. Do you think you could live comfortably on the salary of a physician assistant?Keep reading to explore this issue in more detail.

Specialized Creditials - Physician assistants specialized in one field will typically be offered a higher salary than those with general knowledge. An example of a specialization is specific knowhow in, say, the field of cancer. There are some specialized fields that have such an extreme demand for talented physician assistants that the assistants get to ask for enormous salaries simply because the industry needs their services and is fighting for their contract.

Location - It is expected that a physician assistant living in a big city where the standard of living is higher will make more than a physician assistant in a rural location where the price of living is lower. When students ask themselves, how much do physician assistants make? they should always keep in their minds that geography will massively impact the size of their salary in this field. All of this is generalized, since some big cities do have lower paying positions and some small towns do occasionally offer very high paying positions.

Students understandably need some time to consider these factors and think about their potential income as a physician assistant. Since the factors that determine pay are experience, specialization, and location, it is largely determined by the knowledge of the person applying for the job. To look at this in another perspective, though, even what would be considered the most low-paying physician assistant job would still qualify as a pretty high salary by the definition of most people! You have to consider that before you get caught up in trying to find the highest paying position possible.

So the big question is how much do physician assistants make? Well, to answer that, we have to regard what the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says on the subject. The average reported salary for physician assistants in 2008 was over $80,000. The average percentage of presently working physician assistants earns in the range of $68,210 to $97,070. To get more specific, those with the lowest ten percent of salary make about $51,000 a year, while those in the highest ten percent make about $110,000 a year.

Consider a quick list of average physician assistant salaries for those working in different environments:

Public Hospitals: $84,500
Educational Institutions: $74,200
Government Offices: $78,200
Private Clinics and Offices: $80,440
Outpatient Clinics and Centers: $84,390

Do you have a much better idea of what physician assistants can make? Their earnings are also based upon the hours worked by the physician assistant. The average yearly salary estimated for full time physician assistants in 2008 was $85,710, according to the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Physician assistants who work at an entry-level position make around $74,470.

There are some expenses of the trade which can also be paid on behalf of a physician assistant, including the following: state license fees, liability insurance premiums, credential fees, DEA registration fees.

The physician assistants who worked in a full-time, clinical practice got an average income of $85,710. First-year graduates made an average, yearly income of $74,470. These figures come from a publication from 2008 put out by the American Academy of Physician Assistants. The years of experience, specialization, geography and practice setting are all contributing factors to income. Employers of physician assistants frequently pay for their credentialing fees, registration fees with the DEA, professional liability insurance and state licensing fees.

The allowed time off for illness and vacation should also be considered. Some choose early retirement at age 50, but most will keep working until 65 so that they can get even more money as part of their benefits when they retire.

There should be no lingering questions about what a physician assistant can make at this point. This analysis breaks it all down into understandable numbers, so keep it close at hand. Generally, physician assistants can expect to make between $50,000 and $80,000 per year, though this range is not set in stone. It is possible to earn substantially more or a bit less, so do not consider these figures guarantees for your future.

Discover The Route To Becoming A Physician Assistant

Someone may be seriously interested in beginning a career as a physician assistant if they have actually spent some time thinking about what they need to do to make it happen. The high demand that is present right now for people trained in this field is amazing and it is expected to only get higher so selecting this as an occupation is a great idea. The healthcare industry actually has many different opportunities like this. The admission program training prerequisites vary with some degree, and many insist that you at least possess a college degree. Even after you have gotten through the schooling that is necessary you will still have to pass an exam before you are eligible to get your license. Larger opportunities are available for those that are looking for work in a larger city rather than in a more rural area.

To gain admission into a physician assistant program, you will have to take the needed college courses. All schools will require you to have a minimum of eight hours of anatomy and physiology classes prior to admission. This can be worked out to either two semesters or just one semester of each, plus lab work. Some institutions, like UNC, only offer a combined course that is taken in one semester but this is not acceptable for most of the physician assistant programs. You do need to make sure that the college you are attending can offer you the courses that will be required so check this out as early as possible.

You have to be familiar with the purpose of a physician assistant in the healthcare field. Thus, you will require shadowing hours, and some schools demand between 50 and 200 hours of this! Perform these hours with more than just one physician assistant. A lot of schools demand that applicants have some experience hours to show for.

An important part of becoming a physician assistant is obtaining some great references. You will be required to have at least one reference from someone that is working in the medical industry but you may also be asked to provide a reference from one of your professors. You should really try to obtain a reference from someone that is known in the industry as a physician assistant. You should remember to plan ahead and start looking to nail down your references up to six months before you actually need them. Your references will receive email notification from the CASPA when their reference is needed and they will then either email the form back to them or mail it in. You should know if your references want to provide the reference via email or via the postal service.

Spend extra time studying for the GRE. You may begin by focusing your studies on the vocabulary words that are new for you. For example, learn a new vocabulary word each day to see if you can utilize it in your everyday conversations. Studying also involves studying at least one or two GRE questions a day.

If you want to know how to become a physician assistant, you have to know that it is also based on getting your application in early. Some people do not understand that they may actually be rewarded by the school for turning the application in early. You can recieve reduced fees from CASPA, early invites, and the first possible interviews when you submit your application early at some schools. Your essay that is written for CASPA should be one of the first that are recieved. Your supplemental application can be turned in to the program once they have recieved your CASPA application.

It is time to get ready for the interview! Basically, start your interview with a short (20 second or so) opening on why you want to become a physician assistant. You should be careful that you do not contradict the information that you submitted in the essay that you wrote prior to the interview. Its also advised that you rehearse what you will say so that it flows freely and confidently from your mouth during the interview. You should bring up topics like what you think a physican assistants role is in the field, why you decided to apply to this particular school, and what makes you so interested in working in primary care.

The last step in how to become a physician assistant relates to presentation. Do dress suitably for your interview, which means that you must look conservative. The attire for a man should be a pair of nice dress slacks, a dress shirt and a tie. Women should stay away from tight skirts and a lot of cleavage and should stick with a business suit. You will likely have many people competing against you for this position so you want to look your very best.

how to become a physician assistant is a very multi-faceted process. While you are preparing you will be focused on getting the right references, taking the classes that are right, and getting into the school that can offer you the most. From there, it includes applying early and making a good impression in your interview so that you can get into the program that you desire.

The Journey To Become A Physician Assistant

Different schools have different admission policies. There are some schools that will allow students to enroll if they have spent some time working in a healthcare position but most of them do require that a degree in the science field is completed prior to enrolling. If you have a science degree and some experience, the admissions committee will welcome you with open arms. The time that is necessary to get you into the school should then include all time working in the healthcare industry as well as the time spent in school.

Here is one very important piece of advice: if you are serious about getting into the school, spend some time doing some research to learn the history involved in the physician assistant position and speak to someone in the healthcare industry that can help you to be more prepared during the interview. These professionals will know what an admissions committee will likely ask. If your application is rejected by the admissions committee, you have to take the time wasted into account just in case you dont get admission in another college.

The AAPA, or American Academy of Physician Assistants, has mandated that each person that wishes to begin working as a physician assistant must first complete twenty six months of classes at an accredited school. This will put an additional twenty six months onto the time that it will take to begin working, and be sure that you are enrolling at a school that is accredited. Each exam will be given and managed by the NCCPA, or National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. You should see if the school can give you some additional information in a packet or in a brochure.

The Physician Assistants admission process requires a student to open an account with Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CAPSA). The applications that are turned in to CAPSA will more than likely not have a quick turn around time. So, you must ensure that you take this CAPSA-process time into account and apply early - it should not be that your application is cleared after the college has started its course. You must ensure that you do not lose any time. Sometimes the college will mandate the students be enrolled in an affiliate university as part of their application processes. If you consider the factors stated above, you will realize that becoming a Physician Assistant is a long process and requires a few years of study and experience, and very careful planning and preparation.

A test is given at the end of the physician assistant course and this will determine if they are able to begin practicing. The exams and testing programs may be different in different states. However, one thing is common and that is all Physician Assistant graduates must successfully complete a licensing exam that is administered by the state. The physician assistant may begin to practice right after they have passed the license exam in some states but others have more requirements. When you are calculating the time that it will take to begin practicing, be sure to include this additional time if it is required. Once the physician assistant has successfully completed the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, or NCCPA, exam, they will have earned the title of PA-C, or Physician Assistant - Certified. In order to keep the C at the end of their PA title, at least one hundred hours of CE (Continuing Education) courses must be taken every two years and they must be tested on their skills one time in each six years.

You must push yourself to be organized and aware during each of the many steps involved in becoming a physician assistant because how long does it take to become a physician assistant depends on your commitment. If your goal is to be successful in this role, then you need to consider all of the requirements and how much time it will take you to accomplish them before you enroll in the course.

Physician Assistant Career - Do You Meet All The Prerequisites?

If you are looking for a career that will give you great job security, you might want to consider entering the medical field as a physician assistant. You wont need nearly as much education to become a physician assistant as you would need to become a doctor or physician, yet you will still earn a decent salary and full package of benefits. Yet, this is not the easiest career field to enter as there are some prerequisites which must be met.

The physician assistant prerequisites for licensing will vary from one state to another. The last step in the process is always to pass the national certification exam, but you will have to go through a bachelor degree program before you can qualify for a training program. The exam you ultimate pass is called the PANCE, which stands for Physician Assistant National Certification Exam. You will be ready to pass this examination after going through a certified training program for physician assistants.

Most training programs will require you to have an associate or bachelor degree in a related field, but some people have postgraduate work to their credit before entering a program. You may also be required to have some working experience in the medical field. You can gain working experience by working with doctors as an intern or other positions while you are in school. This is where valuable professional connections are made, and it is where the foundation of knowledge is established for future physician assistants.

Once you are accepted into a physician assistant training program, you will be fully prepared to pass the national examination and to meet all other prerequisites demanded by your state for certification. Some very competitive programs may even expect you to provide references from professionals in the medical field to gain admittance. If you have gained some working experience, securing these references will be much easier.

Once you have become certified and licensed by your state, you should expect to continue your education and pass ongoing prerequisites to remain licensed. Many states just want you to continue your education to stay up on the field, but the requirements will be different in one state to another. You should learn about these state licensing requirements in your training program, but you can also get the details from your state governments website.

It should be noted that working toward a career as a physician assistant is different from pursuing a career as a nurses assistant. The training that a physician assistant must undergo is considerably more complex than what a nurses assistant must go through.

physician assistants work hand-in-hand with medical doctors, and they are able to give authoritative medical advice and write out prescriptions. They can even take daily appointments and have their own patient base in a doctors office, as long as they are practicing among physicians for support. Obviously, this includes far more responsibility than someone in a nursing position would be trusted with. This is why it is much more difficult to get into a career as a physician assistant than a nurses assistant.

A career as a physician assistant always starts with undergraduate coursework. You must check with your preferred physician assistant training program to see what undergraduate degree you need and what other prerequisites are required for admission, so you can eventually pass that national exam. Once the training program has been completed, you just have to pass that exam and register with the state so you can get a job.

For some, this is seen as a faster way to get into the medical field, but you cannot underestimate how difficult it is to get through all of these physician assistant prerequisites. You can expect to going through at least a couple years of postgraduate work before you are ready to pass that national exam and enter the field as a registered physician assistant.

Uncover The Truth About Being A Physician Assistant

Any student should be very happy to discover that a physician assistant salary is fairly elevated. How much they can expect to make can vary greatly depending on where they are working. A physician assistant (PA) is a healthcare professional that is able to practice medicine but only under the supervision of a doctor.

While previously only provided by a medical physician, a physician assistant can provide the necessary medical services that will help humans treat, prevent, and overcome illnesses and injury. A physician assistant is able to exam the patient, discover the ailment, and give them a medical prescription that will help them to recover from the illness in most cases. This person may also place orders for and then review any lab tests that are needed, discuss solutions with the patients about preventing this illness from recurring, assist in a surgery, give the patients the instructions regarding their care, and prescribe the medications that are necessary. For all of these tasks, a physician assistant salary is usually quite high.

Students who go on to become physician assistants can rest assured that their physician assistant salary is somewhat higher when compared to those of other healthcare professionals. There are many things that lead to this increase in pay but the main reason this is true is because the physician assistant often takes care of many of the duties that a doctor does in a typical day. As a result, a physician assistant currently is in high demand across many different healthcare settings, and this has a lot to do with the fact that a physician assistant is capable of performing specialized duties that, frankly, others in the healthcare field simply are not qualified to perform themselves.

A student that finishes their schooling to be a physical assistant can expect a physician assistant salary that varies depending on several factors that can vary. However, the considerations that they will have to look at in terms of how much they could make as a physician assistant are quite straightforward. The information that is given below will give you an estimated scale for the pay for a physician assistant. Any student that takes the time to consider all that they have to do to work as a physician assistant will likely see that the other benefits of this career choice are just as nice as the financial gains.

Based upon a variety of factors that will be explored in greater detail in the following sections, the salary range for a physician assistant can be anywhere from $50,000 to $80,000. While there are positions that will pay more or less than these amounts, the information that has been found on Indeed.com shows that this is a good range for someone in the medical industry.

Specialization relates to how much specialized know how a physician assistant possesses. As an example, someone may have extensive training in treating cancer. A physician assistant that has a focused area that they trained in can ask for a larger pay amount when they have been offered a position. This is because their specific knowledge is more appealing to employers.

If physician assistants are working in more rural regions, they are not going to be earning as much as those who work in bigger, urban centers. As a result, students should remember that geography is going to play a large role in determining how much they will make. Students should still remind themselves, however, that it is possible to still earn a good living even in a rural setting.

In May of 2008, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released the average pay rate for a physician assistant and it was $81,230 each year. The lower 10 percent of persons working as physician assistants makes about $51,360 per year, while the average percentage of those currently working physician assistants earns between $68,210 and $97,070. Each year, the upper ten percent are making $110,240 annually.

The median, yearly salaries of people in this profession who work at various locations are as follows: Higher Education Positions : $74,200; Government Offices: $78,200; Doctor̢۪s Offices and Clinics: $80,440; Outpatient Centers and Clinics: $84,390; Medical Hospitals : $84,550

The number of hours that a physician assistant is willing to work will also impact their pay rate. When the physician assistant works in a full time position they can expect to receive a pay rate of about $85,710. The American Academy of Physicians Assistants produced the 2008 Census Report that included this information. Considering the information that was covered above, even someone that is just entering the field should plan on earning close to $74,470 annually.

Outside of the annual salary, a physician assistant may also find that they can be paid for state licensing fees, credential fees, registration fees with the DEA, and professional liability insurance.

Based on the aforementioned 2008 Census Report, the average income for a physician assistant who was employed in clinical practice full-time was $85,710. This does not negate the fact that a new graduate will earn only $74,470 each year. Factors such as location, experience, specialization, and the setting of the practice should also be remembered.

Physician assistants can leave credits that may be utilized for recuperation from illness or for vacation. They may decide that it is time to retire once they have hit 50 years old but most of them will keep their positions until age 65 so they will have more retirement benefits.

There has been a continuous demand increase for physician assistants for the last 10 years. The physician assistant salary has a prospect of increasing since the job market demand is also expected to rise in the following eight years.

The inner city and rural areas of towns are growing so there are new healthcare buildings going up which makes more opportunities for this growth to take place. It is predicted that there will be a 39% increase in the number of physician assistant positions by 2018, which is factored from the opportunities in 2008.
